No Time for Bad Attitudes

Posted by ks on Apr 29th, 2009

Whether you have one child or ten, no one has time for bad attitudes.  Around here, our kids are encouraged to try everything for themselves – at least once, before deciding they don’t like it. Complaining doesn’t get them anywhere and the attitudes are not tolerated. There’s simply no room for it. Be respectful of those around you, their time and interests. Keep any bad attitudes that may be brewing tucked away or I may just help give it a quick nudge out the door.

Often I’ll hear one of the kids say that they don’t want try out for a particular sport, club or activity because someone else told them it wasn’t fun, was too much work or wasn’t what their friends were doing. That doesn’t work for me. Jim and I hold fast that the activity must be tried personally before they can decide not to participate.  Even then, we’ve got to talk through the pros and cons before making that decision. We want them to experience life for themselves and take on new challenges, not just check it off the list without trying. There’s simply no room for that kind of attitude.

Indoor fun

Posted by ks on Apr 13th, 2009

During this time of year the weather can be a bit… unpredictable. One day you might be outside soaking up the sun and enjoying some great exercise, while the next day you are stuck inside because of the thunderstorms rolling in. But instead of getting down about your indoor days, you should get creative! There are many fun activities you and your family can take part in. Head to the kitchen to create a yummy, healthy meal together, play an active indoor game, or throw a family dance party! You don’t need nice weather to have fun, and you definitely don’t need it to stay healthy and keep active.

If you don’t buy it, you can’t eat it

The idea of making your family’s diet a healthier one can be an overwhelming thought in the beginning. But taking the first step towards this more nutritious lifestyle is as easy as watching what you stock in your pantry. Instead of greasy chips, opt for baked chips and crackers. Popcorn and peanuts are more great alternatives. For your sweet cravings try dried fruits and sugar-reduced snacks. There are many tasty options for you and your family to try as you improve your dietary lifestyle. If you don’t buy those indulgent snacks, you won’t be tempted to eat them. Instead, you will have delicious substitutes ready and waiting.

Try Anything Once

Posted by ks on Apr 2nd, 2009

You can try anything once. From food to an activity, we are firm believers in giving it a try before crossing it off your list.

In our big family, there’s no room for picky eaters so when it comes to trying foods, it’s really pretty simple at our table. Eat what is served or – don’t eat! When it comes to sports or other clubs and activities its a slightly different policy based on the same principle.

You’ve got to try it for yourself before deciding not to participate. If you hear from others that track or basketball is too hard and base your decision not to try out on that, I won’t hear of it. I make sure the kids give it a good go. If it’s not for them and they really do hate it, Jim and I will make the decision to move them out. Most times, they find that they do like it and can seek the benefits of how one less than favorite sport or activity can actually feed their favorites.
