More than 400 different types of bacteria normally live in your gut. Although fewer than one percent are undersirable, your health can be compromised when the balance of these organisms is altered. Here are some reasons to consider them:
Ease digestive disorders_If you are on an antibiotic, take a probiotic to prevent diarrhea.
Treat urogenital infections-Probiotics may be beneficial in treating vaginal infections and for treating chronic urinary tract infections in women.
Prevent allergies in children_Pregnant women with a family history of eczema or other allergies may want to take a probiotic in their last trimester. Newborns given probiotics their first six months and whose mothers took them their last trimester had a reduced incidence of eczema. The helpful flora may help maintain a barrier in the newborns’ intestines that when disturbed may favor development of allergies.
