Consistency is Challenging

Posted by ks on Mar 12th, 2010

At times, parents fail to set the rules, stick to them, or allow their children to experience consequences because of their own fears as parents. Parents fear the child not liking them or being angry at them in the moment. We fear that the child will somehow lose out on a friend because of a rule or lose a future opportunity because of a consequence. In other words, sometimes parents fail to do the tough stuff because of their own fears and their own needs, instead of doing the right thing, in the long run, for their child. At times, it takes a lot of thoughtfulness and strength to do the right thing, instead of the easy, feel-good thing for children. West County Psychological Assoc.

We can go to a sanctuary within

Posted by ks on Feb 24th, 2010

Constantly thinking about trying to control our partner can create an invisible shield that stands between us, stifling our intimacy. The problem is that in our preoccupation we lose contact with our own inner stillness. We sacrafice our needs in order to control our mate. When we think we can control anyone but ourselves we live in delusion. Our best intentions with control lead only to more stress. When we have made peace within ourselves, we can go to a sanctuary within. Whenever relations with others are in turmoil, we can retreat to that place and be calm, knowing that we can only control ourselves. Then, with each other, we stand on a solid foundation of inner stillness. Hazeldon
